The main character is a 20 yr old guy who spends way too much time hanging out with his tenants 11 yr old daughter, but there's probably nothing weird going on as he come off as extremely dull and slow, not to mention he still sleeps with his teddy bear while his tenant sings him dragon lullabies. As such, people who hated the first book tend to hate the sequels even more while audiences that fell in love with ‘The Fire Within’ have only good things to say about the rest of the Last Dragon Chronicles series.

You get to read a lot more about David in this story, as he has finally returned into everyone’s lives after quite the long time and is beginning to get closer to everyone again. What’s even more interesting about the story in this book is that you are about to meet a few more dragons than the clay ones that Elizabeth creates and brings to life. The author knows his dragons. The dragon scenes are good. But there's also a really compelling story about the human side of things. The writing is great, and, while it isn't incredibly detailed, it easily puts you in the scene. The story actually focuses more on the human character of Ren rather than the dragons. The ending was satisfying and unexpected (at least for me, anyway), and the book didn't feel like it dragged on at times.

This series contains examples of:

A research trip to the Arctic and a contract for a new book -- life can't get much better for David Rain. But as soon as David finds himself in the icy climates, he begins to write his legend of the bears, dragons, and the mysterious fire star. Soon he realizes that his tale is starting to mirror real life, and that an old enemy is on her way to meet him. One thing that I only liked about this book were the dragons themselves. They may be just clay (with magical powers) throughout the plot but whatever. They're the reason why I even started reading this book in the first place. And the prospect of having seemingly alive clay dragons is kinda fascinating. There is something more to this battle and to what is to come in this world as there are signs that something else, far worse, is planning to bring more changes to their world. Something is rewriting history itself as you get to find out for yourself what exactly that is when you get to this part of The Last Dragon Chronicles. Agawin

Nothing Is the Same Anymore: In Fire Ascending, after the universal mess that had been created got repaired, so to speak, the universe took one more change. It plays the entire series off as books written within the series. See The End... Or Is It?. Sophie Prentice – David's first girlfriend who dies in Dark Fire. First appears in The Fire Within as a veterinarian working at The Wildlife Hospital. Also tried to help them when Conker, one of Lucy's squirrels, was injured. Wise Beyond Their Years: Alexa in Book Four. It's strongly implied that she chose her own parents and family before her birth, and has been manipulating things behind the scenes for a long time beforehand.

The Last Dragon Chronicles review, 1 by Mutiversewriter, literature

I really liked the unique take on the dragons, but unfortunately dragons aren't the focus of the story. The focus is on the drama of the neighborhood squirrels, and while I found that story charming, it wasn't the story I wanted to read. I wanted to read about the magical clay dragons, what they do, where they came from, how it came to pass that they ended up with Liz and Lucy. We get a taste of the clay dragon mythos, but only a small one. That, to me, was the more compelling storyline, and I spent the whole book waiting for the author to get around to it. But alas, as I realized too late, the book wasn't really meant to be about the dragons. It was more about the humans (and the squirrels). David is soon dragged deep into the secret history and world of dragons. Liz and Lucy are among the last protectors of the world's dragons — descendants of Guinivere, a maiden who befriended the last "true" dragon. Dragons aren't the big beasts they once were — now, they must take clay bodies. But they still have dragon's sparks, deep down. And David and the Pennykettles must protect them from all who would do them harm! I was pretty disappointed with this one. Quite a few of my kids at school really like this one and the series. It has a pretty cool core idea with some dragon lore and living dragon statues, but then like 80% of the book is about saving some squirrels! Who cares?! Seriously. The little girl and the main 20-yr-old freaking out so much about the squirrels isn't really believable and it definitely isn't interesting. We have reached the fifth book of The Last Dragon Chronicles series and this story might be the most exciting and suspenseful yet as a terrible danger has threatened the entire world and it is up to our favorite characters to save the day again. The characters are likable and entertaining, if one-dimensional, but it's disappointing that you don't really learn anything about David. It's implied he's a geography student, it's implied he plays the guitar, he's caring, he's definitely creative, and definitely very awkward, but that's about the extent of what you learn about him. The relationships the characters form are quite cute, though the romance is underdeveloped. But then, I don't really expect developed romance from a children's book.

As the weather grows wilder and the ice caps melt, all eyes turn from the north to David's daughter, Alexa. She is the key to stopping it... but can one girl save the world from the forces of evil or will she disappear like her father? It was very full of good moments! It was also very full of bad moments. It kept raising my expectations and then letting me down. I can't hope to describe everything that let me down in this book. It has intriguing world building, but it treats its dragons grotesquely, and their society seems unhealthy in more than one sense. I often found myself gritting my teeth at yet another gross description. The ultimate sin though was that I hated the characters too much. There were a very few characters to root for, half of whom suffered and died horribly, and everyone else was wretched. There wasn't a sense of people trying their best. The sense was instead that the cast was made of awful characters suffering in the societies they were making awful. This fascinating journey starts with this first book of The Last Dragon Chronicles, in which you get to meet the main character himself, David Rain. He seems like a pretty ordinary guy, a college student who is trying to make something of himself in this world.exciting character who appears here and along with David, they manage to accidentally injure a firebird and this unfortunate event actually turns into the most exciting adventure they have ever experienced. Part Three With the help of David and Rosanna, the firebirds must reach across the universe to call on the dragons for protection. But will the dragons arrive before the Ix destroy everything? The Wearle brought with it the interesting story of both a young blue dragon and a young tribal boy. Though I struggled through the first third of the book, once I got to the half-way mark I couldn't stop! Some of the writing, though intentional as it is, made it hard to read and somewhat difficult to relate to. The Kaal tribe, I understood, were not as progressive as the dragons and their speech reflected that. But needing both a huge character list at the beginning of the book and a long glossary at the end made it difficult to stay immersed in the story. Five years have passed since David, who is now a bestselling author thanks to his magical writing dragon, who has helped him much, went missing in the Arctic. You get to find out that this world in which these characters live is somehow becoming unbalanced and a lot of things are starting to go badly. The goddess of Earth, Gaia, is becoming anxious and restless as this means terrible news for many. Alexa

The fifth book, Dark Fire, sees David and Zanna teaming up with a group of dragons to stop an ancient evil that has been awakened. The book delves deeper into the mythology of the dragons and introduces new characters and plot twists that will keep readers guessing until the very end.Someone to Remember Him By: The end of David's first story, Snigger and the Nutbeast. And at the end of the third book, Zanna reveals she's pregnant with David's child. Is David's power strong enough to protect an entire world, including those he loves and all the dragons, from an evil older than time? David Rain is a young man who meets Elizabeth Pennykettle when he rents a room in her home. David learns that Elizabeth makes clay dragon figures for a living. She even gives David one of her dragons as a gift to welcome him into their home. Hrrr Durr" said that dragon. If you missed it the first time, don't worry, they'll point this out like 50 other times, because it's very poignant that the dragons are...well, special. In July 2002 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Leicester for his contributions to children's literature. Although writing is now his main source of income, he still works at the university as the operator of the confocal microscope.
