Hutton said his youngest son, A.J., is the same age that he was when he wrote the diary and it reminded them how different growing up is for kids today. In fact, it took four years, 880 statements, 2,000 exhibits, an exhumation and words from beyond the grave for police to expose the trainee vicar –who worked as a carer for the elderly – as a psychopathic killer.

Diary of a Headteacher : Smith Head Trauma: The Bruising Diary of a Headteacher : Smith

Their main worries about teaching until the new teacher retirement ages of 67 or 68, were not being physically or mentally strong enough to do this job, with 57% stating this as being a concern. After a while, wanting to do something became more important to me. I didn't want the pressure of full time headship or even supply teaching. I wanted to be involved in something else and use my experience and skills, but I didn't want to do what I'd done before. Hopefully next year will be better and this brings me to something else. Next year this blog will be dormant as I have started a new blog for a hopefully year long Challenge that I am hoping to complete. It too involves a lot of reading ... so maybe I will find my reading mojo somewhere along the way ... and it deserves to stand alone with it's own space in blogland. But once the “umbrella drinks on the beach” daydreams fade, we are all a little hazy on just how we will truly feel once retired. What will we really miss, and what will we happily leave behind. My former students now range in age from 44 to 13. I've written numerous letters of recommendation for colleges and scholarships, I've written one plea to a parole board testifying to the character of a young man and begging for leniency, and I've written one heart-wrenching eulogy.

I have had many memorable students die in tragic and unexpected ways: electrocution; car and plane accidents; running bases; pernicious anemia. I ache remembering these kids: a gregarious redhead; a likeable imp; a boy with impossibly deep dimples. They are frozen at the age when I taught them, when I took for granted they would outlive me. And I grieve for them.
