In her 1985 book The Female Malady: Women, Madness, and English Culture, 1830–1980, Elaine Showalter traces the history of psychiatry from its association with gynecology to the pervasive overrepresentation of women in mental hospitals, and onward to the 1960s when studies concluded that mental illness was found more often in women than men. Academics, scientists, government officials, and business professionals got involved to essentially grab a piece of the market share. I urge you to take questions of language seriously—not because you need to become a historical or linguistic expert, but because seriously exploring and answering such questions helps generate broader societal shifts. Additionally, you can learn more about both the DSM description of the condition and the lived experiences of people with that presentation of neurodivergence.

When we allow our wide variety of brain makeups to flourish, we create a better tomorrow for us all.

This is an option too, but only if the cost for lights, heating, and the tents actually did fit in the budget. They found that incorporating components of divergent thinking into learning, such as generating unique ideas, "might be a powerful tool to improve reasoning. This wonderfully positive and accessible introduction to the neurodiversity paradigm is packed with life-changing insight for anyone whose way of experiencing the world diverges from the ordinary. Foundations for Divergent Minds (FDM) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization rooted in the principles of disability justice.

These people usually hit all of their developmental and behavioral milestones at the same times and ages that are considered standard for most people. The idea of neurodiversity also seeks to frame these differences as ones that are not inherently "bad" or a problem; instead, it treats them in a more neutral manner and also highlights the many different ways that neurodivergence should be celebrated and how it can be beneficial. Physicians began to manage these centers and in turn medicalize interactions with patients as opposed to relying on more gentle, human dynamics that brought out “balance” in the individual. Much of what became known as “madness,” especially in women, cemented around the time of the acceleration of capitalism in Western Europe. Give your team members the opportunity to choose which type of thinking they would like to engage in (if they have to pick.

Hysteria was described as a “disease” of “uncontrollable emotion” that predominantly affected women, and “sexual emotions” encouraged it.

As you notice these patterns, you will get a better sense of which "group" prefers one style over the other. Between a flawed system that focuses on diagnosing younger, male populations, and the fact that girls are conditioned from a young age to blend in and conform to gender expectations, women often don't learn about their neurological differences until they are adults, if at all. Nearly two hundred art and psychology students participated, first by measuring their moods with an adjective checklist before performing the required tasks. The book de-pathologizes those of us who most profoundly and intensely think and feel the world around us.

FDM focuses on providing resources, education, and support to increase access within communities of all kinds. Therefore, according this theory, people who use more divergent or lateral thinking will more often use the right hemisphere. They don’t mean to turn the suffering inflicted by our own peculiar institutions, the depression and anxiety spawned by the displacements of late capitalism and postmodernity, into markets for a criminally avaricious pharmaceutical industry. They are instead viewing them as different methods of learning and processing information, some of which become disabilities in an inaccessible and ableist society. Between the early 1800s and early 1900s, “The everyday psychopathology of the masses was a burgeoning and protean market, especially among the swelling ranks of the affluent; and doctors, armed with the authority of the microscope and the pharmacy, had seized it,” explains Gary Greenberg in The Book of Woe: The DSM and the Unmaking of Psychiatry. The first process has been modeled by emulating responses to the Remote Associates Test (RAT) by Olteţeanu and Falomir (2015) [9] and Klein and Badia (2015).
